They are directions so you know what to expect and you can be prepared. Some may call this being a "control freak". I call it being responsible.
When I agreed to run a half marathon, the first thing I did was research. I googled "how to train for a half marathon" and then picked through the options until I found a course that looked reasonable. I assumed this schedule was mapped out by someone who had actually followed it and finished a half marathon. Someone with more experience than myself...
The 10-week training schedule maps out the mileage you should run every day in order to be prepared for the race. The course is plotted- the directions are simple. All you have to do is follow the directions and log the miles. All you have to do is follow the plan and trust you will be prepared in the end.
Isn't this so much like what God asks of us? He has given us directions... clear, simple directions that have been followed by many people who have come before us. All you have to do is follow the plan and trust God that you will be prepared in the end.
God's course has been plotted in the bible. http://www.bible.com/
