Running to hershey... day 49

The past few weeks have been nothing but misery.  Let's not talk about the 10 mile run attempted 2 weeks ago with brand new insoles (BIG mistake!) or the 11 10 mile run last weekend or any other workout from the past week and a half for that matter.  It has been miserable but I refused to give up and have continued to get myself out there and log the miles.

To say that I broke through the storm this weekend is an understatement!  Yesterday I ran 12 miles in 1 hour 54 minutes and 13 seconds!  I don't think anyone could be more shocked than myself!

Here's the breakdown:
3 miles:   28:00.45
6 miles:   28:20.14
9 miles:   28:53.89
12 miles: 28:58.92

I spent those hours thanking God that He gave me this amazing gift to run and I pray that I can cherish every step I take, even the painful ones (did I mention the 10 mile run attempted 2 weeks ago???).

Here's a sneak peak at my latest project.  Please excuse the sweat... it's all part of the testing process.

the course

I like rules.

They are directions so you know what to expect and you can be prepared.  Some may call this being a "control freak".  I call it being responsible.

When I agreed to run a half marathon, the first thing I did was research.  I googled "how to train for a half marathon" and then picked through the options until I found a course that looked reasonable.  I assumed this schedule was mapped out by someone who had actually followed it and finished a half marathon.  Someone with more experience than myself...

The 10-week training schedule maps out the mileage you should run every day in order to be prepared for the race.  The course is plotted- the directions are simple.  All you have to do is follow the directions and log the miles.   All you have to do is follow the plan and trust you will be prepared in the end.

Isn't this so much like what God asks of us?  He has given us directions... clear, simple directions that have been followed by many people who have come before us.  All you have to do is follow the plan and trust God that you will be prepared in the end.

God's course has been plotted in the bible.  http://www.bible.com/

My eyes are opened and my heart is full

My heart is completely full with amazement at the wonder of life today.  My son is going to kindergarten and as I have been preparing him for this stage in his life, I have also been preparing myself for the sadness and loss I will feel as my "baby" goes out into the world without me for the first time.  We had the opportunity to go to school today to experience what his days will be like.  God opened my eyes so I could see my son for who he is... a smart, independent, brave young boy who is ready to take on the world.  I feel no loss or sadness today, only great joy that I have followed God's path and brought my son along.  I know that he will be in God's care everyday when he is away from me just as he has been everyday he was with me.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."  Proverbs 22:6

Running to Hershey... day 1

Today is it!  I have officially begun my training schedule for the Hershey half marathon!  After quite a bit of research, I found a 10 week plan that I think I can manage.  In the past I would never have nightmared dreamed I would even consider running 13.1 miles but thanks to some college girlfriends and the promise of a giant chocolate chip cookie at the finish line, I will give it a shot. I don't know if I'm excited or just scared but this is how I'm going to find out what I'm made of.
